Testing Testing
I've been fairly busy lately with various updates and lots of research into various projects, but I have found some time to try out a few php scripts that I have been meaning to test for a while. So far I have been impressed with them and will probably use them in some future website design projects.
The first is the blogging script WordPress which describes itself as a state-of-the-art semantic personal publishing platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability. It is these features of usability and conformability that attracted me in the first place and now that I have used it (see My Personal Weblog for a demo) I am not only impressed, but looking forward to using it in anger on a real website in the near future.
WordPress is a php and MySQL based script, which is my preferred web-development environment and basically offers an easy to use but fully featured content management system for websites. Although aimed mainly at weblog type sites it can easily be customised to suit the needs of most websites that need to be regularly updated. As well as being able to add new articles as with a standard weblog website it also allows the addition of static pages to the website and provides control over other links and files. There is also the ability for multiple administrators to work on maintaining and updating the website as well as a comprehensive user privilege system.
Best of all, the creators of WordPress have gone to great lengths to make sure every bit of WordPress generated code is in full compliance with the standards of the W3C. This is important not only for interoperability with today's browser but also for forward compatibility with the tools of the next generation. This is a feature of websites built by Pixelwave Design, so it is good to find ready made scripts that conform to these standards as well.
I have also been playing with the Photo Gallery software 'Coppermine'. Again this is a fully featured script that is easy to use even for those with little technological knowhow. As yet my installations of this are not standards compliant, but I shall be working on that when I get the time. So far I have been fairly impressed with this script as well and am likely to utilise it in the future.
