Weather Station Website in Wales Goes Live

Weather Station Website goes live.

Despite the Xmas and New Year I’ve actually been quite busy working on an interesting feature for the Forces-of-Nature website. The project involved the installation, and set-up of a professional quality weather station, the connection of this to a dedicated PC and then the building of a website that automatically receives weather data from the weather station and uploads it to various web-pages at 1 minute intervals.

The web-pages are now live online and can be seen at the Borth and Ynyslas Weather Station pages on Forces-of-Nature. (Full access requires registration and subscription to the service).

Included on these pages are:

  • A page showing the current weather conditions and forecast
  • A page dedicated to the wind with current conditions, recent trends and daily, monthly, yearly and all time records.
  • A page dedicated to the temperature and humidity with current conditions, recent trends and daily, monthly, yearly and all time records.
  • A page dedicated to the barometric pressure with current conditions, recent trends and daily, monthly, yearly and all time records.
  • A page dedicated to the all time highs and lows
  • A page containing various graphs of recent data

For the technically minded, the entire system works as follows: The Integrated Sensor Suite (ISS) is located outside in a remote, exposed location and measures various weather parameters. This then transmits the data via frequency hopping spread spectrum radio technology to a console. This is attached to a data logger which in turn is attached to a PC dedicated to running Weather Display software. The software on the PC interprets the data from the data logger and generates various reports and graphs which it then outputs as graphic files and raw numerical data to a text file which is automatically uploaded to a web-server at 1 minute intervals 24 hours a day. Once on the server various PHP scripts then perform calculations and formatting procedures on this data and output it to xHTML files styled using CSS. These make the data available online to anyone with an internet connected computer.

I’m pleased with the results and can’t help checking to see what the weather is doing NOW!

The system was set up specifically for the windsurfers and kitesurfers who use the local beach and visit the ‘Forces-of-Nature’ website, but it is hoped that it will also be of interest and use to people from many other walks of life including fishermen, golfers, dog-walkers and anyone else with an interest in the local weather… Which here in West Wales has to be just about everybody!
